The normal small arms in SG would be laser rifles; FP:2, I: d8.
You could mount a HEL/1 as a heavy weapon, but need to have drawbacks to
balance the extra offensive gained.
I use a DFFG/1, but it has FC:d4, I: d12x2* (d8 vs infantry) with heavy
weapon bands and cannot be used with squad fire (requires it's own
activation).  
The ESU RFAC/1 uses FP:d8, I:d10*, but infantry bands & the NAC has a
version as well.

>From what you've written, you just need to upgrade the standard rifles
to
pointfire weapons (FP:2, I: d8*).  This means your rifles can actually
hurt
tanks (d8x2* on major hit).
