No, you've been doing it right.  The rules are pretty clear on that. 
Choose the highest factor that is merely a number.  And factors that
have
are in the form of +X add to your base number.	So if you are shot and
suppressed for the first time, two line troopers die, and your squad
leader bites it, you only test for the squad leader dying since it is
the
highest number.  It seems kinda odd to me as well.
