I was working on a Universe several years ago where Earth was a new race
that found it's way into space by reverse engineering crashed probes and
scout ships from more advanced races.  Terrans found that they were on
the
edge of a very large, very old Empire in a state of decay (much like the
old
Rome).	Indeed, these highly advanced cultures had lived in luxury so
long,
and had so much of their thinking and planning and labor done for them
that
they no longer truly understood their own technology.  Wars within the
Empire had become highly stylized, mechanized, rituals.

Into this, the humans had become an insignificant outsider, the alien
trash
of the galaxy. Stealing, raiding and trying to walk carefully like a
midget
in a world of giants.
