http://mail.csua.berkeley.edu:8080/mailman/listinfo/gzg-lMy approach has
been:
Major Militaries have all varieties of vehicles. Gamers go with themes,
militaries go with capabilities and major militaries have to project
power
into every corner of their empires and operate in all sorts of climates
and
planetary conditions as well as in space. This applies to mobility types
as
well as weapon types. Nobody lacks some HEL units (range!) or plasma
units
(shock) and nobody lacks grav (mobile hitters or scouts over all
terrain),
ACV (good over water and sloughs as well as plains or deserts) and
tracked
and wheeled (for cheaper ops, for more rugged country where grav is not
justified). Of course, you can throw in VTOL and Riverine.
Major Militaries: ESU, NAC, FSE, NSL in my opinion. UNSC later in canon
timeline.
ESU: Some smart folks working for some sort of antiquarian-thinking
neo-communists. The ESU strikes me as having a fair number of grav
vehicles,
but theirs will tend to be of more robust and simpler approach. I
generally
give them slightly worse EW/ECM/Stealth/Decoys/etc. than their NAC
counterparts. Certainly some of their territorial troops (militia) would
use
wheeled or tracked vehicles if their particular AO permits. But larger
Confederation Marine and mobile Army units would have to be equiped with
more flexible vehicles - ACV or Grav. In my take, they like big guns and
have less electronic capability than the NAC. They have some excellent
super-heavy PA (in 25mm, I use old school heavy gears which are class 1
vehicles) and reasonable standard PA.
NAC: They like heavy armour, good electronics and FC, moderate sized
weapons
(maybe 1 class lower than the ESU) and things like Stealth, Decoys,
Jammers,
recce drones, etc. They opt for crew protection over offense. They are
medium in the speed department. They tend to use Grav for the Marines
and
some mobile mainforce units and grav, wheeled or ACV for territorials.
They
have some very good normal PA (fast, tough, well electronically
equipped).
FSE: Again, they probably have all types of mobility. But I see them as
having an FSE Army but this army being more patchwork than the ESU or
NAC
due to how the FSE is constructed (of different nations, with each
nation
supplying gear meant to interop but likely built in their nation or its
holdings). The Army probably has a mix - in mobile units, mostly grav
and
ACV, in local forces more oriented to wheeled or tracked as appropriate.
For
the legion, I'm a historical fan so I stick with them getting the short
end
of the gear stick so they often have smaller % of grav in favour of GEV
and
more wheeled vehicles (to allow limited strategic self-deployment, more
than
tracked). The trade off is generally a bit worse electronics and FC than
the
NAC and armour not up to either of the others either - just older gear
generally or simpler gear that was more cost effective. The Army's good
units that are expected to be mobile get better gear than the Colonial
Legion. French PA, for example, is not terribly well known for speed or
armour, but they do carry a fair number of rocket packs to increase
firepower.
NSL: I see the NSL as being highly mobile (relatively speaking). They
understand blitzes and deep exploitations and mechanized and armoured
warfare. They employ a lot of ACV (to allow more of their force to be
fast-mobile than if they sunk money heavily into grav) where feasible.
They
have excellent fire controls and reasonable defensive systems. Armour is
also reasonable but in some cases may be light to allow for more speed.
Their infantry are rarely mobile in wheeled or tracked vehicles and
usually
have the capability to keep up with fast moving armoured attacks. Their
light and heavy PA also tend to be faster and have good FC but at the
cost
of some armour weight.
UNSC: In the early going, an ineffectual (under budgeted) mix of gear
bought
from competitors and national government's hand-me-downs. Later on,
their
own home brew gear and ending up being some of the most advanced in
human
space. My choices here are influenced by the fact I use Tau Devilfish
and
Hammerheads for their vehicles - so heavily VTOL/Grav with fast, very
mobile, well armoured PA. Their heavy PA is a bit slower, but makes up
for
it in FP. They tend to be very heavily (% wise) mobile reaction forces
and
tend to do less long term garrisoning than other nations.
For my FSE legion, I use 6x6 wheeled AIFVs. Those are backed up by some
wheeled tanks and the PA. The legion makes due with cheaper gear, fewer
guys, and all the nasty assignments. C'est la guerre!
