Minor Nitpick, there was body armor development
during WWI for the static warfare role of snipers
and machine gun teams. The Germans at least had
breast and groin plates as well as face shields
that locked over their helmets for defense
against incoming rifle rounds and fragments.

The armor was of course useless for the
attack being far to heavy to move about in at any
speed or endurance. So it was only effective for
static defenders with heavy weapons who wouldn't
be going over the top on the attack anyhow.
