Another series of novels with alien societies is the "Well World" series

by Jack L Chalker.  Fascinating series.  The planet: "well world" is 
divided into some 1300 hexagons.  Each is the home to a different alien 
race.  In each book, the characters visit a number of different hexs.  
So you get a short view of a number of these alien cultures/races.
