I do this for space ships, but it should work for vehicles as well.

I make a rod out of aluminum tubing and put an 11mm magnetic jewelry
clasp on to hold the ship/vehicle.

The base of the magnet is about 11mm in diameter, so I put it onto an
11mm aluminum tube, and make a sleeve out of a smaller section of tubing
so that the magnet "hole" is flush with the top of the tube. I then
drill a hole in the bottom of the ship and mount the other side of the
magnet to it.

For space ships, I end up with about 6mm of magnet sticking down from
the bottom of the ship. Since they are only visible when the ship is
off for storage, I don't care.	With vehicles, you could embed the
magnet more deeply by drilling a hole in the resin.

The downside is that these can spin on the base. For my ships, I have
not found it to be a huge problem. One solution would be to make a
groove in one side of the connector an a ridge on the other that would
keep it in place. Ninja magic makes the same kind of connector, but
with teeth on it to keep it in alignment. I can't justify their prices
compared to doing it my way. :)

Hope this helps,

John
