In the Battletech universe this is a major problem (especially pre-clan)
as
up to 99% of FTL travel is controlled by the houses (directly or
indirectly). There are some mercenary/merchant jumpships, but they are
rare
and the cost to hire them (anywhere near a warzone) is exorbitant.
Negotiations with the employer usually specify the means of FTL
travel; either government or the mercs get reimbursed a lower rate if
they
want to arrange commercial travel (government travel = free, commercial
travel = costly, but no "misjumps" into a warzone).
