Sounds like the organizers are not experienced miniatures gamers.  US
cons
typically have 6x6 or 8x8 tables for planning purposes.  Scheduling
usually
allows movement of tables to accommodate scenario requirements.  

6x4 sounds a lot like Warhammer games, and not much else.
