When you enlist in the armed forces you actually signup for more years
then
you serve. When I signed up you may have signed up for 3 or 4 years but
you contracted for 6 years. Today you contract for 8 years. I think that
that time can be involintaryily expanded but only if war is declaired
(not since
WWII).
