The "unreasonably hostile critters" thing has been done, though--Harry
Harrison's Warworld IIRC, and David Drake's Redliners, among others. 
What
sets the Pantheistic Eco Terrorist Association apart?  Maybe instead of
vicioiusly attacking with weapons, they try to convert the soldiers
instead.
