I'm not sure either. It was supposed to have kitchens, sleeping rooms,
etc.
for the crew, plus 35 (!) separate engines, 960 cubic meters of fuel
etc.etc. maybe all that added up..

Actually, it was not intended that it should break ground in enemy
territory. Its primary weapon consisted of 1100 mining charges. It was
supposed to dig under enemy positions (especially bunkers), deposit its
charges and blow the bunkers up. Makes some mad sort of sense.
