On the subject of space for non-mini paraphernalia we need to have at
hand during a game: Like you, when I have something "semi-permanent"
table-wise for gaming I want to do something to keep the stuff off the
table but still handy.

What I've decided on is that I'm going to build a gaming table that's
6'x8' with some wood "rails" on the top that's about 1' in from each
side. That will leave me with a 4'x6' playing surface (arena?) and a
"shelf" around the edge of it that will be about 11.5" wide.

I'll flock the surface of the table that's inside the "arena" so I can
use the table as-is, but the rails will be 1" tall so I can also use
sheets or "tiles" of foamboard to permit "depth" in building river or
trench terrain using 1" thick foam.

Depending on the space I have available when I build this, I may put the
"shelf" only on two opposite sides of just around one corner. That would
make the table 4'x8' or 6'6 for the former, or 5x7 for the latter).

Actually, I kind of like the idea of the table being 4'x8'. If I hinge
it in the middle of the long side, that will make it square for
