One would also have to consider the British equation
as well.  Given that they were largely responsible for
our ability to enforce the Monroe Doctrine when it was
issued, they could conceivably have a BIG problem with
Germany trying to take over land in the Western
Hemisphere, particularly so close to Canada.  If that
were the case, the Germans would find it a near
impossibility to secure their supply lines against the
predations of the British fleet.
