I'm glad you brought this up. I liked the point you made regarding
standoff
capability for interceptors, and it got me thinking about different
flavors
for fighters. Mind you, this will not and is not intended to solve the
problem of fighter overpower, but it will give people flavor options,
and
might move in the right direction, if added to other rules to reign
fighters
in.
First I decided to creat an XY grid. Along the top I put 3 fighter
types:
Superiority, Multirole, and Anti-ship (S,M,A). Down the side I put 3
"Strength" types: Light, Medium, and Heavy (L,M,H). It looks like
this:
S M A
L 1 2 3
M 4 5 6
H 7 8 9
With the following abilities for each:
All Light fighters are easier to kill than normal (Add an additional 1
to
all rolls vs. them).
All Medium Fighters are as per normal rules vs. fighters.
All Heavy Fighters are treated as Heavy fighters in attacks against
them.
1 Normal rules for "Interceptors".
2, 3, 5, 6, & 8 Normal rules for fighters vs. ship, except may only
attack
ships once.
4 May either use normal interceptor rules or "Standoff" attack (may
attack
other fighters from farther out, say 12", but roll without interceptor
+1
bonus).
7 May make Interceptor +1 Bonus attack from standoff range.
9 May either make 2 standard attacks or 1 heavy attack (Per Torpedo
fighter
rules).
Given the granularity of the game, they should all be able to be the
same
mass, but you'd want to tier the price for them. In addition, Fast (36"
move) or Extended Range (extra endurance) could be purchased by any
fighter,
at a cost.
