White Dwarf once published something very like a "points system" for D&D
monsters, called the Monstermark; it was, in essence, what you suggest,
but written as "the typical amount of damage this monster will do before
it's killed by a generic first-level fighter". In practice, this was
(mean damage per round) x (mean number of rounds surviving), which
(while being essentially the same as your suggestion) is easier to
calculate... the only problem is in defining the DS equivalent of a
generic first-level fighter.

And, of course, mobility. :-)
