Well the Ballard web site has a page on how their
"Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell" (PEM) works.
"The fundamental component of the Ballard fuel cell
consists of two electrodes, the anode and the cathode,
separated by a polymer membrane electrolyte. Each of
the electrodes is coated on one side with a thin
platinum catalyst layer."
This electrode assembly makes up one fuel cell plate,
which are combined to create the power unit. The
number of plates in a unit determines its power ouput.
