Yes I have put these together so they do work :)
I couldn't scan them so you will have to wait for pics
They are mostly hexagonal shaped (hope that helps :)

Yes that was because you can use any of the connecting pieces at any
blank point.
But I take your point about not mentioning that.
Oh and the colony and modular tower block can go either way up you 
just have to be consistant with the direction of the window shading.
