If you were feeling really keen you could remove the original cast-on
base and
replace it with prescribed plastic card of a decent thickness (say 40
thou).
Evergreen make 'sidewalk' pattern card in various spacings / thicknesses
which
sound like it would be ideal (in fact it's a square grid). For the
really, really
keen you could model manholes covers, drains, etc.

And don't forget that your trooper should never, ever stand on the
cracks in the
pavement ... ;-)
