The Martians from the movie would indeed be boring.  They resisted a
nuclear 
attack!  But the original Martians of Wells' novel were unable to
complete 
their flying machines before earthly germs did them in.  Their vehicles
were 
tripod walkers with heat rays and poisonous black smoke generators. 
They 
were not immune to turn-of-the-century artillery fire, and the H. M . S.

Thunder Child survived a heat blast while destroying one.
