     Civilian ships are easy to recognize in FT/MT/FTFB, they have no 
weapons/screens.   

Suggestions: 
MV - Merchant Vessel
SS - StarShip
TV - Trade Vessel
IT - Independant Trader
NM - Non-controlled Merchant

A third digit could be added to better define types.
-L - Liner
-B - Bonded
-C - Colony (Bulk personel)
-G - General (Bulk cargo)
-M - Mixed (Passenger/Cargo)
-T - Tanker
-S - Subsidized
-N - Non-schedualed
-F - Fast
-R - Regulated
