On heavily-settled planets, the mobile weapons platforms might not need
such large power generators. They could hook up to pre-positioned
'power links' to the planetary grid, fire, then be off again.
Admittedly, your grid would eventually begin to fray under an orbital
bombardment, but you could get a much bigger beam weapon on your mobile
unit.
(In a Gernsbeck universe, your defending units could even depend on
broadcast power.) ;)
