This depends on the situation. Usually I think it would be preferable to
suppress the enemy with massed gunfire while advancing other forces to
close with the enemy. The suppression fire has the combined effect of
lessening the effectiveness of return fire, saps the suppressed unit's
morale and lowers their mobility. Of course, if your intent is an
ambush, then waiting for the enemy to close is preferable.
