GenCon is a roleplaying game convention. But that's kind of like
saying that Microsoft makes operating systems and word processors.
GenCon is still mostly about roleplaying. AD&D is very popular, but so
is Call of Cthulhu, the White Wolf games, and most other big RPGs.
Even the small ones usually have at least a couple of events. There is
a big CCG presence, but there are also historical miniatures games, SF
miniatures games, Warhammer, board games, and War College lectures.
The program book has 6 pages of SF/Fantasy miniatures games alone. On
top of that, the game convention has a SF convention in the middle of
it. Two years ago, almost 30,000 people attended!
GenCon is probably the best convention to attend if you can only
attend one a year and have a wide range of options. I'd probably
prefer something like Historicon for miniatures, but I also play
roleplaying games as does my wife. We hardly see each other during the
convention, but she's usually busier than I am!
