This is certainly true. I think the manouverability counts for more
than speed (they're obviously related of course). The trick is
usually to stay in the big ship's rear arc if at all possible.

True and don't forget fighters. A fighter capable of moving 12" is
going to have a pretty hard time catching up with a ship moving at
36", which is not a completely unusual speed for one of the people I
play with to use. If fighters and missiles are not involved, though,
speed starts to matter quite a lot less because of the typically large
firing arcs possible on FT ships.
