[GZG] IF - NAC AAR

Subject: [GZG] IF - NAC AAR
We recently ran a Full Thrust game with 600 point squadrons. The Islamic
Federation took on the NAC and Israeli alliance. The battle featured the
use of Heavy Missiles.
The Islamic Federation squadron consisted of a Sahaabah CP, 2 Saladin
DDHs, and an al-Hawar FF (armed with 2 Beam-2s). They faced a Victoria
BB escorted by an Israeli Kashat-E Escort Cruiser.
Picture of my IF squadron is here:
http://www.stokesinternet.com/games/IF-Ships.jpg
After a couple of turns of manoeuvre the front-most destroyer ended a
hair inside 36''. The Victoria opened fire with its Beam-3s, singeing
the armour at long range. In response, at the start of next turn the
Islamics launched all their missiles, 8 of 'em. The Islamics then
reversed thrust and veered off trying to stay out of the Victoria's
mid-range beam envelope until the missiles hit. But it didn't quite
work, the lower thrust Sahaabah crossed just within 24'' and drew all
the Victoria's fire. But it worked out ok, the round of fire didn't do
that much damage, and it put the Sahaabah in range for its beams to
return fire.
Then the missiles closed on the Victoria. The PDS and Beam-1s on the
Victoria and the escorting Kashat did their best to stop them. They took
out 5, but that left 3 coming in. They did a total of 18 pts of damage,
a rather mediocre result. But it was enough to push the Victoria through
one threshold check and well on the way to the second.
The Islamics then turned in on the Victoria from 2 sides. They poured
their beam fire into the Victoria, while she split her fire between the
cruiser and the lead destroyer. While the Islamics took damage - both
targets ended up passing through their second threshold - they lost
primarily engines, not weapons, and so they retained most of their
combat punch. Meanwhile, the hits piled up on the Victoria. She lost her
screens on the second threshold, (which was a major blow since I had
been rolling an unusually high number of 4s) and things just got worse.
a couple of turns and she was finished.
The Kashat had lost its FTL, so was stuck. It made a valiant run at the
destroyers, but was quickly dispatched.
We used the rules for Heavy Missiles as given on the Islamic Federation
lists. We did not allow the larger calibre ship weapons (Beam-2s, etc)
to fire on the missiles. The missiles which got through did inflict
significant damage on the Victoria, but it represents a major slice of
the IFs offensive capability. More defensive fire would had pretty much
neutralised their effect.

Hmm. I replied to this and I never saw my response. It's in the
vermouth
archives but not the regular archive...
