Greetings:

A forum might be a good place for pictures, rules
drafts, or fairly permanent things. But every group
that I've joined originally as e-mail that gets
swapped to forum is one that I eventually stop
reading.

E-mail is a better approach for me. Easier to save
messages, for example.
