For Low Tech (relative to 'then' not 'now' - a point of assumption I see
in certain arguments on other threads) there is also the options of
"dogs" - terran or local in origin - released from the vehicles
(internal
or external; built-in or attachable) as needed. Perhaps you have
neo-dogs or neo-pigs or neo-Harriers (a neat low flying, chase down the
dinner raptor) that are common in the colony (frozen embryos shipped
with
colonists.) Or local native semi-intelligent humanoids (or neo-Apes)
and, in water worlds to stray OT, neo-Dolphins.
Lots of options.
