Yes, he was real, and a historical person. As someone already 
mentioned, he is Saint Stephen (aka Stephen the 1st.)

He was the first "real" king of Hungary. Effectively he founded the 
State, christianised the Hungarians and made a strong central control 
that transformed Hungary in one generation from tribes of nomadic 
horsemen to settled, organized state.
