Uh, massacres stiffen American resolve, not weaken it.

The biggest thing that foreigners fail to comprehend
about Americans is that you mistake natural
peacableness with cowardice.

Santa Anna made that mistake, ordering no quarter to
be given at the Alamo and a prisioner massacre at
Goliad.  All he did was guarantee that the Texans
would fight well.  Also see US reaction to the Malmedy
massacre et al.
