a) a ringworld isn't very plausible but it's more plausible than a Dyson
sphere.  Not that you should let that stop you.
b) if the builders are still around, the players will be considerably
outclassed--the ability to build a Sphere requires ultra-super-high tech
c) if the builders aren't around, a Sphere will take a looooooooooong
time to explore.  If you set it at one AU radius, it will have a surface
area something like 1.25x10^13 times the surface of the Earth, IIRC.
