I'd think they'd have SAWs--but of whatever model the
enemy is using.  :)  To make them more useful, you
might make them able to spot as troops one or two
grades up or perhaps even more--troops rated "green"
because they have no stomach for a standup fight, but
who have been evading enemy patrols for years and spot
as elites would be the extreme, but not implausible. 
You might also allow them to detach a guerilla to a
Regular squad to act as a "guide" (and bring his
enhanced spotting abilities with him).

And a dumb LT that makes too many promises finds
himself in hot water with his chain of command. . .
His side might win the battle, but he personally would
not win the AAR.
