Tom's made some good points - it seems that Mr. Tuffley is ahead of both
of us, however.

In the very last section of the FMA beta rules, deep in that points cost
section I hadn't been paying attention to, there's whole lists of HtH
weapons and values associated with them - from which, I think, Jon's
intended rules can be panned out.

Basically, each HtH weapon has die like a ranged weapon: there's a
Weapon
die value & an Impact die. If a modification of the ranged mechanic is
used, I'm assuming each combatant in HtH rolls their Quality + HtH
Weapon
die types. If a hit is scored, the Impact die is used vs the victim's
Armour die.

EG Squaddie Funk has an AAR w/ bayonet, and is REGULAR. Ganger Zroog has
a
big Sword that he thinks is kool, and is GREEN.

Assuming Zroog gets to within chopping range of Funk, Zroog will get d6
+
d10 (Quality + Sword die) vs Funk's d8 + d8 (REG quality + bayonetted
rifle). If Zroog's kool sword gets past Funk's rifle, the ganger rolls
d8
impact vs Funk's d6 partial armour. Otherwise, Funk rolls d8 bayonet
Impact vs the ganger's d4 leather coat.

These rules do have rules for just shooting the other guy while in HtH -
an SMG, for instance, rolls a d10 Weapon die, and Impact is identical to
ranged fire (d6 or d8 for an SMG - I can't find the values right
now...)

Points:

- I'd like to see some sort of reaction check for ranged-weapon armed
characters who're being charged - give them a chance to whip the gun
around and shot the charging guy. Obviously Reaction Fire/Overwatch can
be used, but some sort of extra firing might be in order - reaction
test,
at +0 if the figure didn't fire when they were activated, +1 if they did
fire? (Rationale being that a figure focussing on firing is probably
more
likely to be blindsided?)

- I'm assuming that the above method of HtH resolution would use a
varient
of the Major/Minor Success (beat two/one die) - say, Minor success = no
attack but victim must make Reaction/Confidence check to remain in HtH?
Major success = move on to Impact/Armour damage rolls?

Hopefully we'll have another bash at FMA in the next week or two, and
we'll give some of the more detailed HtH rules a shot.
