This would turn the S'V into pale imitations of humans, barely alien at
all... Besides, as Beth pointed out, you're removing every advantage the
S'V have.

I doubt the S'V sniping is actually unbalaced, personally. It's only the
very largest ships that have enough power to throw beams a serious
distance, and it's rarely more than one or two die. They've come out
about
even in all the games we've had them in locally.
