RE: Star Mats

You can get very nice stencils in the US of actual
constellations - from the science toy shops
I'd use this as a basis for your star pattern
this will give you the big blobs. 

The stencil also has a map included showing the
starfields of the milkyway which can inspire your
more dense patterns.

fine starfields can be done using a toothbrush
dipped in paint and then running you finger
over the bristles at varyinjg heights above the 
work. Practice on some newsprint first.

What paint to use. KR has a secret formula. 
you'll have to experiment, but try the fabric
craft paints section first.
