I'm in the process of doing the exact same thing.  Originally, I made
range sticks with 4' of dowel.	Nice, but the wood started slightly
warped
(and it's near impossible to find a straight piece) and got worse over
time.  Now I'm making the same sticks out of aluminum tubing (it's
lighter than brass).  My suggestion would be to prime the rod first with
auto primer and then spray-paint on the range colors.  Just use tape to
mask the ranges you've already painted.

I enjoy playing on a 4'x6' table.  It's a good size for reaching minis
and
being able to take in the whole battle.  Though the occasional game of
FT
on a 6'x8' table is fun due to the extra maneuvering room.
