I have one word for you: plastic cutlery. Ok, two words. Forks have
spikey
bits, are available in clear and opaque, colored and unpigmented, and,
if
you go to enough fast food joints, totally free. ;->=

Little plastic birthday candle holders are another easily available item
for
scratch-building\modifying.  They make particularly good large engines.
