I have always assumed (can't be certain, as Paul Copeland designed the
FW
minis, we only cast 'em!) that the "barrel" is a stowage container of
some
sort. Tankies often stow stuff on the front to give themselves that
little
bit of extra protection - hey, better the bedrolls buy it than the
crew!!
:)
If you assume a not-too-flammable fuel, it could even be a supplementary
fuel drum, like the Rooskies carry in a very exposed position on the
back
of tanks.
