Guns for sale in the US "over the counter" fall into two categories:

1)Hunting weapons (Shotguns, Rifles up to .30-06 calibre)
2)Handguns (anything up to and including .45 Magnum)

Most states require some form of paperwork and waiting period to
purchase a weapon. There are restrictions against felons owning
firearms as well in most states. If you have a clean record and
complete a course in Florida you can be issued a permit for carrying
a concealed weapon as well. Without special collector's licenses you
cannot purchase fully automatic weapons. (Although as you may be
aware that it is simple to modify a semi-auto to a full aoto weapon
in many cases)
