C.J. Cherryh, Devil to the Belt (Heavy Time, Hellburner omnibus). Also
Downbelow Station, Chanur books, etc.

Look at Trowbridge/Smith Exordium: Yes, FTL, but some of the non-FTL
battles are interesting. Tacponders, anyone?
