My main problem is heat - because of the climate here.
If I leave my models in the car for as little as half an hour during 
summer, the plastic stands look like abstract sculpture.

Simple, cheap metal stands would be a godsend to me. Just kits 
consisting of a crudely cast hex base and a cheap nail would be enough.
