This program is a great vector graphics program and being free and open
source makes it better.

PNG is nice, but vector art bits are always preferred.

Inkscape uses SVG natively, and PNG is it's default bitmap export
output, so it's easy to maintain files in both formats.

For those still wondering what SVG is and if it works in all OSes:
www.inkscape.org - Inkscape is available for Linux, XP & OSX, and is a
very cool app. Worth checking out for all sorts of graphics work, not
just FT icons!

In our current FT group, there are several Linuxers, one OSX user, and a
couple of XP victims, so finding stuff that works for all of us
computer-wise is a bit challenging...
