That's not true any more. The command distances have been increasd in
Flames
of War Version 2, and conscript infantry now can be up to 2" apart.

If you don't specify an approximate base size you might run into some
problems with other area effect weapons.
In Flames of War, conscript (poor quality) infantry have to be touching
at
least one other base to form a chain back to their platoon HQ to be in
command. There are far more vulnerable to artillery templates than
veterans
that can have 6" between stands.
Or if you are assaulting, every stand within 2" of the enemy gets to
fight
so putting your units on a smaller base might gain you an advantage.
I also think that similar bases makes for a better looking game and more
recognisable units amongst those that play.
