G'day,
As far as the science of purring goes, purring is in the ear of the
beholder. Depending on how technical you want to get about purring then
there is a whole load of debate of which cats can purr. If you want
technical a purr is one both inhale and exhale, which means only small
felids (domestic cat, caracal, serval, ocelot etc) can purr - with the
puma being the largest of these species. If on the other hand you want
to lob in with the "it sounds like a purr so it is a purr whether its on
inhale, exhale or both" then at least a few large cats can, including
the lion, cheetah and tiger.
You wouldn't believe the vitriol that turns up in the literature on this
one. Heaven forbid we ever run into a feline-like alien species ;)
