Only after the game, if there are wrecks of the ship in the battlefield,

the winning side can then capture wreckage and reverse-engineer a rough

No. In fact, we generally require that PDS fires at a bulk number of
fighters, figure out what percentage of fighters were destroyed, and
take
that proportion of each fighter type away.
Keep in mind, this is in a setup where we used to abstract the fighter
groups and you fired at the whole swarm in bulk rather than at
individual
groups. We also didn't use morale rules. You rolled up your total
number
of fighter kills, and took however many groups you needed off the board
based on the results.
