I second the call for acrylic medium. I comes in many types and they are
excellent to adding texture to otherwise boring surfaces.
Another option is to use crushed kitty litter mixed with water. It forms
into
a paste-like substance. Add some PVA glue to hold it all together and
apply
with a flat knife. I think that sand may be a bit rougher at scale than
"real"
asphalt. Makes excellent gravel roads (and roofs on buildings) though.
