To some extent, yes.  If you think your're facing IF troops, you'll
know you can't stand around in the open even beyond rifle range,
because they always have mortars on call.  On the other hand, they
don't stand up well to close assault (+1 penalty to morale check to
initiate or receive).

 you may need to adjust your plan a little bit.

On the other hand, if you play IF vs NAC tonight, NSL vs FSE tomorrow,
PAU vs AE next week, and KV vs SV the following weekend, then you're
not likely to have much opportunity to fine tune your plans to the
opponent's force.

It also depends on how you play.  If you just set your troops on the
board and say "these are infantry, those are pioneers, you know the
combat walkers are off board over there somewhere", then it's not the
