Last night we fought a quick DSII battle.
The scenario was this:
The NAC was coming in to liberate one of their colonies
from an unpopular secessionist government. Unfortunately
one of the main areas that needed to be taken was in a
mountainous area, the only acceptable landing point a
fairly well gaurded starport. Special forces were slipped
in and took over the starport but not without a radio transmission
alerting local forces. There are inbound local forces that need
to be delayed until the orbital forces can be landed.
Setup:
The NAC started in position, hidden, and dug in. In addition
to 13 stands of infantry of which 4 were GMS/L troops they
were allowed to place 3 mine fields. They had 660 points total.
All units were orange, the draw provided 3 orange-1's and one
orange-3. The NAC group was allowed to setup on their side and
up to 2/3 of the table.
The locals started with a hodge-podge of GEV vehicles, the only
thing close enough to react and arrive in time. They were allowed
up to 4 GEV MICVs with basic infantry. They chose to bring only
2. They chose unit quality completely at random. They had 2000
points of vehicles.
The NAC setup was beautiful. 3 Minefields covered the difficult
side of the table completely blocking travel. The easy side of
the table was a gauntlet. Oddly enough all the GMS troops were
placed in one unit.
Victory conditions: The locals needed to get 1000 points of
vehicles to the starport. The NAC would not be able to land
their troops at this poiint. The NAC player needed to delay
the locals until the space based forces arrived. To provide
a bit of randomness the forces arrived on a 9 or better with a
roll of (d6 + turn).
As (I, but not the NAC player) expected the locals avoided the
easy route. They lost a GEV Jeep to a minefield. The NAC
player then, strangely, activated his unit of GMS/L, moved them
into the open to get shots at the Jeeps. He disabled one.
The local force brought forward the two MICVs, offloaded the
infantry, and proceeded to decimate the NAC GMS/L troops.
The NAC then activated another unit of infantry, moved them
into the open and fired upon the MICVs, doing no damage.
The locals brought forward a unit of medium tanks and using
APSWs decimated the new unit of infantry. The NAC then called
in a wave off and left with the remaining troops.
I will point out that the NAC player has only ever played
GW games. He ignored my repeated hints because, in his
experience cover is not that valuable. Fortunately he
seems willing to play DS again and the group has a large
interest in SG, if I can ever get forces put together.
