I remember a case a few years ago when a driver was prosecuted for 
running over and killing a pheasant .. out of season. IIRC he was let 
off because the magistrate decided that the law (dating from the 16th or

17th C) didn't pertain to cars, since they hadn't been invented at the 
time it was drafted !

Whether or not he ate the pheasant isn't recorded :-)
