AFAIK, newer tanks often have an inner lining of Kevlar of similar to
catch
fragments.

A point usually overlooked in the discussions of sloped armour is
manufacturing. Rolling armour plate steel is not a simple task and
becomes
more difficult with increased thickness. If your steelworks can only
produce, say, 10 mm thick armour plate, sloping it so that 20 mm of it
has
to be penetrated doubles your protection without having to re-tool.
